Dive brief:

  • The Save Mart companies and its brands have partnered with Fandango to offer movie rewards that buyers can spend at theaters or on the Vudu streaming service, according to a press release on Friday.
  • Buyers who purchase $ 25 of designated products in a single transaction at Save Mart, Lucky California, or FoodMaxx stores can choose between a $ 13 promo code for Fandango or Vudu. The promotion lasts until August 10.
  • The Save Mart promotion coincides with a recent surge in consumers attending theaters as pandemic-era restrictions were lifted.

Dive overview:

Over the next three weeks, The Save Mart Companies will see if the promise of cinematic rewards can boost sales of crisps, candy, soda and other merchandise.

Dozens of items in store aisles will carry “Fandango Buy Me” labels in stores, including brands like Pepsi, Frito-Lay, Nature’s Own and M & M’s. When shoppers purchase labeled items for $ 25 or more in a single trip, they receive a promo code that they can then redeem for $ 13 for a movie ticket or streaming movie on Vudu, which the cinema ticket seller bought last year.

Prizes can be redeemed up to four times per household, and buyers must use their promo code by September 30.

“We know that many of our customers patiently wait for new movie theater options, and this program allows them to choose to visit a movie theater or watch in the comfort of their own home,” Hal Levitt, senior vice president of sales operations retail and supply chain for The Save Mart Companies, said in a statement.

The promotion comes at the height of the summer movie season and as movie chains begin to see attendance levels rebound. AMC Entertainment Holdings reported that 3.2 million people visited its theaters between July 8 and 11, setting a record for movie attendance in the previous 16 months.

It also comes from the fact that retailers, like Hy-Vee, Natural Grocers, and Harris Teeter, are getting creative with promotions, rewards, and membership programs. As these options expand, experts predict that companies will add additional perks, like free movie tickets, to their membership platforms.
