New UV adhesives improve the integration of holographic films into augmented reality HUDs

DELO has created DELO PHOTOBOND UV acrylates for optoelectronics which allow fast and color-accurate bonding of holographic films manufactured by Covestro. The automotive industry and many others will benefit from rapid reel-to-reel manufacturing and stronger film integration in holographic end applications.

AR-HUDs represent one of the most critical future applications for holographic films, such as Covestro’s Bayfol HX. As these films are integrated into the windshield, the projections merge with reality so that the navigation appears to be displayed directly on the road. Films provide brighter and larger images while reducing installation space.

This holographic film technology also provides design freedom and reduced space requirements in car taillights and other automotive lighting applications. Custom holograms, such as a warning message indicating “Stop” in the driver’s field of vision, can be created to increase safety.

Whatever the application, holographic films are thin, light and completely invisible under so-called no-bragg conditions – whenever the coupled light does not meet specific needs, such as the right wavelength. Films normally include RGB sensitive photopolymers on a transparent backing film and are embedded between two protective cover layers.
