Ben Schwartz (“Sonic”, “The Afterparty”) is set to join Nicholas Hoult, Nicolas Cage and Awkwafina in Universal’s “Renfield”, a monster movie centered around Dracula’s sidekick and based on an original screenplay by Robert Kirkman, according to someone who knows the project.

Cage plays the iconic vampire from the film, while Hoult plays Dracula’s sidekick, around whom the film centers. Details of the story are kept secret.

Chris McKay (“The War of Tomorrow”) is the director. McKay also produces, and he bases the film on an original script by Kirkman. Ryan Ridley wrote the screenplay.

In Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel “Dracula”, Renfield was a patient in an insane asylum who ate vermin to absorb their life force – and which Count Dracula used to enter the asylum and attack Mina, the Jonathan Harker’s school teacher.

McKay’s production partner Samantha Nisenboim will produce “Renfield”. The film will be produced by the Skybound Entertainment film crew, including Kirkman, David Alpert, Bryan Furst and Sean Furst.

“Renfield” is the latest in his line of films such as “The Invisible Man” which are inspired by his iconic monster movie characters, all of which are filmmaker-led projects with unique stories rather than set in one. shared universe.

Schwartz is an Emmy Award-winning actor, writer and creator who was most recently seen in the indie feature “Standing Up, Falling Down” opposite Billy Crystal and Paramount’s “Sonic the Hedgehog”. He will then be seen in Lord & Miller’s AppleTV + miniseries “The Afterparty”, as well as in the second season of Greg Daniels and Steve Carell’s Netflix series “Space Force” where he stars alongside Carell and John Malkovich. , and Paramount’s “Sonic 2”.
