The 6th Hanoi International Film Festival will screen 123 films from 50 countries and territories from November 8 to 12.

Vi Kien Thanh, director of the film department, said the jury would narrow down the selection to 11 feature films and 20 short films for nominations.

The organizers did not announce the members of the jury and the international guests.

“Hoa Nhai” (Jasmine), directed by Dang Nhat Minh and released this year, is the only local film competing for top honors this year.

The director said he wanted to make a low-budget movie about Hanoians because of how the city has changed since so many people from different places moved here.

The interpersonal bonds between the characters are central to many segments of the film. A shoe shiner, a hairdresser, a teacher from Hanoi and others help paint the picture of a thriving and idyllic metropolis. At 84, Minh said it was his last job.

The organizers of this year have maintained the most prestigious awards, such as the best film, the best director, the best actor and the best actress for feature films and short films.

All entries submitted will be presented free of charge at the National Cinema Center (87 Lang Ha Street), Vincom CGV Center (54 Nguyen Chi Thanh) and BHD Star Cinema (Vincom Pham Ngoc Thach). The three sites are in Hanoi.

During the festival, there will be a variety of film-related workshops and panels open to attendees and young filmmakers.

Celebrities from Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, India, France, the United States and others had attended previous editions of the festival.
