Many are contrarian takes intended to piss off fans, while others are genuine beliefs people have. Regardless of where these opinions come from, they are all unpopular with the fan base as a whole.

Transformers: Prime Starscream is overrated

Starscream in Transformers Prime

One of the franchise’s most popular shows, Transformers premium was a revamp of the series that attempted to bridge the gap between Michael Bay films aimed at adults and the fun hijinks of the G1 cartoon. Fans widely believe he succeeded in this effort, especially as evidenced by Starscream’s portrayal.

Steve Blum gave Starscream all the menace and sass that was required of the character, Redditor AyyUltra felt that “he was just the animation character but dope”. Although the similarities between the two incarnations are there, Prime‘s Starscream turned out to be more than just a clone considering his role as the leader of the Decepticons in the show’s first season.

beast wars is lame

Characters united in Beast Wars Transformers

Often considered the best show in the Transformers franchise, Beast Wars is heralded for its tight plot, endearing characters, and groundbreaking CGI. Still, that hasn’t stopped some Redditors such as Misrable_Toucan from claiming that “Beast Wars isn’t as good as it’s supposed to be.”

While the series certainly has its sticking points and inconsistencies, a look at its second season will reveal Beast Wars Lived up to the hype. No other Transformers TV show is as tightly scripted as the 13 episodes that make up Beast Wars’ second season, and few have raised the stakes like Beast Wars did.

Transformers: Armada is better than the original cartoon

Starscream in Transformers Armada

Transformers: Armada, while a show fondly remembered by millennials and Gen Zers, is often considered one of the lesser entries in the series. The animation is poor for the period, the voice acting can be flat, and the plot is non-existent for the first half of the show.

Despite all the criticism that has been leveled at Armada, Redditors like joshml98 think “Armada is better than most G1s”. For all the original cartoon’s awkwardness and error-filled animation, it’s still one of the best cartoons of the 1980s. Relatively, Armada doesn’t stand up to its animated peers of the early 2000s.

Transformers: Prime has a boring art style

Featuring some of the most stylish designs in the franchise, Transformers: Prime is easily one of the coolest shows of its time, evoking the style of Michael Bay films while simplifying the aesthetic into something spectacular. Not everyone agrees with this take.

Reddit user BigSticky2004 was one of the few to comment that “character design in Prime is bad”. Although some models could have been more colorful – Soundwave, Starscream, etc. – the characters still look good and do a good job of making kids want to buy the toys.

Not all Optimuses have to look like Peter Cullen

Optimus Prime battles Megatron in Transformers: War for Cybertron Trilogy: Siege

The fearless leader of the Autobots, Optimus Prime was brought to life by voice actor Peter Cullen who voiced the character in numerous media outlets. His voice is so distinct that the actor was brought into the movies to voice Optimus, rather than have a celebrity play the character.

As integral as Cullen’s voice is to the character of Optimus Prime, some, like GaiDaigouji, believe that “not all Primes have to be Cullen”. Considering the various actors who have voiced iconic characters like Batman and Spider-Man over the years, that makes sense.

Frank Welker is overrated as Megatron

Megatron in Transformers: Siege

One of the most prolific voice actors in the business, Frank Welker has been active since the late 60s and has voiced iconic characters such as Fred Jones, Dr. Claw and Garfield. He was also the first person to voice the character of Megatron, and defined the role with his exaggerated anger and disdain for Optimus Prime.

Despite all the accolades Welker has received, Redditor ForHonor888 said “Fred Tatasciore is the best voice for Megatron and Frank Welker is overrated.” While Tatasciore does a good job with the role in Transformers: War for Cybertronhis performance is still indebted to the great Frank Welker.

Beast Wars has a better cast of characters than the G1 cartoon

Without a doubt, the G1 cartoon has the most identifiable cast of characters in the Transformers franchise. There’s Optimus, Megatron, Starscream, Bumblebee, Soundwave, Jazz, Ironhide, Shockwave, Grimlock, and many other characters that have continued to appear in various shows.

Despite the iconic character of the original Transformers, Redditor JeffGoldblumChuckle thinks “the cast of Beast Wars is better than G1.” It’s easy to see why. While they don’t have as many iconic characters, the show’s smaller ensemble means they have more personality than most G1 actors.

Transformers: Armada Starscream is overrated

Starscream in Transformers Armada

Often considered one of the best parts of Transformers: Armada, Michael Dobson’s take on Starscream proved that the character had room to grow beyond being a deceitful ass monkey. Despite this creative choice, Reddit user Misrable_Toucan felt that “Armada starscream isn’t worth the hype.”

Given where the story of a repentant Starscream would go in the IDW comics, it’s easy to dismiss Armadathe version of the character as superficial and uninspired. However, the choice to redefine one of the show’s most powerful villains and turn him into an anti-hero was groundbreaking for its time and still holds true to some degree.

Transformers: Prime is overrated

Often ranked in the top 3 greatest Transformers TV shows, Transformers premium is one of the few things in the franchise that people have a unified consensus on. Yet despite its popularity, Redditors like Garrow_the_Khajit believe “TF Prime is overrated. Animated is the show Prime wants to be.”

On the surface, Prime seems to imitate Animated given that its Autobot roster is nearly identical to 2007’s. However, the tone and storyline of the two shows couldn’t be further apart. Transformers: Animated is a lighthearted adventure that portrays the main cast as people learning to be heroes as Prime is a serious show from the start, portraying the Autobots as the last line of defense against the Decepticons during the Great War.

The G1 cartoon is holding back the franchise

One of the franchise’s most beloved shows, Transformers was the cartoon that started it all, and the mythology it wove and the characters it built are those that still drive the franchise to this day. Still, not everyone thinks that’s a good thing.

Reddit user WesAhmedND said it well when he said “G1 is holding this franchise back.” While there’s nothing wrong with building on the original show’s designs and revisiting them from time to time, the fact that few shows have come up with original ideas beyond description of the Great War between the Autobots and Decepticons means WesAhmedND might be correct.
